Since the President took office in January of 2009, he has been on a campaign to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. He keeps preaching to us that this prison is a major reason that al Qaeda or ISIS recruits new members using this place as the reason for the hatred these terrorists hold.
Guantanamo Bay didn’t exist when the Twin Towers fell in New York on September 11, 2001. Guantanamo Bay didn’t exist when a huge hole was blown in the side of the U.S.S. Cole.
History of Guantanamo Bay
America’s history with Guantanamo Bay goes back to the Spanish-American War in 1898. Until that time, Cuba belonged to Spain. The Cubans fought for their independence with the assistance of America. When the war ended, Spain gave the U.S. control of Cuba and other territories. Three years later Cuba became an independent nation. A treaty signed in 1903 stated the United States would recognize Cuba as an independent nation and a certain parcel of land (Guantanamo Bay) would be leased to the United States, renewable forever until both sides jointly agree to end the lease for $3,386.25 annually. The U.S. built a naval base on the site. In 1991, after a coup in Haiti, the U.S. built a refugee camp to house over 20,000 Haitians who fled Haiti by raft seeking entry into the U.S. Cuban citizens left Cuba seeking refuge on Guantanamo Bay as they fled the Castro regime. After 9/11, the camp has been used to house prisoners from the Gulf Wars.
Releasing Prisoners From Guantanamo Bay
The Barack Obama Administration has been systematically releasing the terrorists we have held there. Obama’s people are proud to say that only one in three have returned to the battlefield to kill American soldiers again so far. Secretary of State John Kerry testified before the Senate Appropriations State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee and when asked about Ibrahim al-Qosi, who was released from Guantanamo Bay and returned to al Qaeda. Al-Qosi appeared in videos produced for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Kerry said “He is not supposed to be doing that.” Kerry said there will be consequences for his actions. I wonder what that will be, write a stern letter?
I wonder how much money was spent to capture al-Qosi the first time? I wonder how many American soldiers were wounded or died to put this guy away in Gitmo? How many more American soldiers will die because he is back in operation again? There is a cost for releasing these terrorists.
Another prisoner scheduled for release is Haji Hamidullah. This prisoner was captured in the summer of 2003. Hamidullah was a member of the Taliban who acquired rockets to be used to shoot down commercial aircraft. He is considered a high risk prisoner who if ever released would probably return to carry out his attacks on civilian targets. Congress blocked the release, but President Obama is adamant that Hamidullah must leave Gitmo.
Obama Plans to Transfer Prisoners
Congress has told the Administration that the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center will remain open. They approved Defense budget spending and included a ban on any funds used to close the facility or transfer any prisoners to the U.S. mainland. As usual, Obama ignores the law and plans to do as he wants.
Obama wants to send these terrorists to U.S. prisons located across the country. He has stated there would be a huge cost savings. What he doesn’t account for is the increased cost associated with their new homes. We would need added security in all the prisons. What would be the effect on the nearby population? How many converts to radical Islam would be created by their exposure to the other prisoners?
The President doesn’t care what Americans want or think. He will defy Congress because he never recognized their authority to create laws. He ignores the courts for the same reason. Obama said he would still close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, even though Congress strongly objects. Because Congress has been so outspoken on the subject, the White House said the Republicans refused to “engage” with the President. Because Congress will not permit the closure, the Administration will consider using Executive Orders to do Obama’s bidding. By the time the Courts overturn Obama’s illegal actions, or a new Administration reverses the Administrative action, the Detention Center will be closed and dismantled and the prisoners will already be on American soil or released.
Some of the terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay Detention Center have been there over 10 years. As enemy combatants, they remain in confinement until the military action ends. These groups swear they will never quit which causes a problem for those captured. Once they reach the mainland, their American rights kick in. Their lawyers will demand they be released for lack of due process. They could possibly be released into the United States population.
