Remember when Queen Nancy said we had to pass the healthcare law to learn what’s in it? Well, we have and we have. Volunteer firemen have been classified as employees under the new law. That means that each volunteer must be counted as an employee required to receive healthcare from their group if they spend over thirty hours a week on their volunteer activities and there are over fifty members in the group. The regulations state anyone “on call” counts as time spent on the volunteer activity.
The estimates of cost range between $500 and $1,000 per month per volunteer. This would bankrupt most volunteer services. The smaller municipalities that rely on volunteer services could not begin to cover these costs.
For some reason, having insurance from other sources doesn’t work under the ObamaCare rules. I would think that the volunteers would have coverage through their employment (which is probably the case now) is not acceptable. Blending this overlap would be the common sense approach that makes the most sense.
Several member of Congress, both Republicans and Democrats have tackled this problem. They have asked the ObamaCare people for a clarification on this issue. The folks who are running the program haven’t responded. Congress has written several bills to correct this problem, but with the short work schedule and other things like the budget on the schedule, it is doubtful any action will take place before the end of the year. Obama also must sign off on the legislation, which is doubtful.
I am sure that there are a lot of other things in the healthcare law that need tweaking. The most obvious solution is a single payer with a single policy. That is the end goal for the Democrats and the Obama Administration. They would like to do away with the Blues and any other company that offers policies. Then the Federal Government would control 1/6th of the economy without any competition from the private sector.
Socialists really do believe that the world would be a better place with them making all the decisions. They really do believe this. But they also believe that it will only work if they are in control. ObamaCare is a symptom of this belief.
The affordable Care Act is a bad piece of legislation. The Obama Administration has said as long as Obama is in office, the law will stay in place. The Administration has not been very flexible when it has come to this law. Obama has said if anyone has any ideas on how to make the law better, let him know. The Republicans have passed changes to the law to correct some of the problems only to find a deaf ear in the White House. It seems the only thing the Administration really wants to hear is how wonderful the law is.
I guess the volunteer firemen will just have to be replaced by a paid staff. While we’re at it, let’s just end all volunteer activities. Under this Administration, Government should control all of this stuff anyway.
