President Obama held a meeting with the Congressional leadership to discuss how to reopen the government. The meeting lasted over an hour. Afterwards, it was reported Obama told the group he wanted everything he asked for, fund all the programs at the inflated level he wanted or the government would stay shuttered. Harry Reid, the Majority Leader in the Senate, said he agreed with Obama and would refuse to vote on any bill the House of Representatives sent him unless it was exactly what Obama wanted. Both men stated if the government stayed shut it would be the Republicans fault. John Boehner, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, said Obama and Reid told him he must give them everything or the government stays shut. There will be no compromise from the Democrats, and if Republicans don’t capitulate on every issue, it will be the Republicans fault the government stays closed.
Obama was politically groomed in Chicago. This is a city where Democrats rule with an iron fist. They don’t compromise, just dictate their will. Republicans are ignored, and there isn’t any Republican elected officials, so no need to ever learn how to compromise. If you examine Obama’s first five years in office, you will note he hasn’t compromised once, not a single time. Try to think of an issue where Obama crafted legislation with the Republicans so a major piece of legislation passed…………… give up? I thought so, it never happened. If Congress doesn’t give him exactly what he wants, he just issues an Executive Order or has the various departments issue regulations to give him what he wants.
Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, acts like a spoiled brat. Waaa……..waaa……..waaa, give me everything I want or I won’t play. He reminds me of a kid at the table who can’t go play until he eats his peas. His temper tantrums are beneath his office. The Republicans have sent him four (4) separate bills to reopen the government. Reid has refused to allow the Senate to vote on any of them.
John Boehner has a very difficult job. The Republicans are split on philosophy. One faction, led by the likes of the John McCains of the world, want to talk tough, but go along and get along. The other faction, inspired by the Tea Parties, want the government to return to the spirit of the Founding Fathers. Ted Cruz is one of the leaders, but he is only one of many members of Congress that are pushing this agenda. Boehner must keep both groups on track to create a unified front. One thing Boehner must do is stop negotiating with himself. When he does that, Obama wins.
As long as the Democrats refuse to nudge from any position, the Republicans shouldn’t either. Obama is waiting for the Republicans to implode so he can declare total victory. This would give the Democrats a chance to keep the Senate and maybe retake the House in 2014. That would allow Obama and the Democrats to enact another long list of objectives like they did in the first two years of Obama’s reign.
