Volume 13, Issue 01-19: Guns

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” So states the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. This is the Amendment in its’ entirety. Most people think this document was to guarantee the rights of the people. That’s not the case. The Constitution was a document that LIMITED the power of the new government. When the original document was drafted and ratified in 1787, there was a mistrust by the states. A series of Amendments were proposed to further restrict the Federal Government. Initially there were 10 amendments that were drafted and ratified by the states together in 1791. The people didn’t trust the new government. We had just separated from England and no one wanted to create that situation again. If the population was armed, then the people could rebel if the government overreached its powers. No one foresaw the advancement of the weapons we have today. None the less, the purpose of the amendment stand today. The Founders realized an unarmed population would make the people subservient to the government.

The United Nations is currently drafting a regulation to be released this spring to register all privately owned guns. Our own State Department is involved with the wording of this treaty. Once passed by the U.N. and ratified by the U.S. Senate, it has the impact of a constitutional amendment. It is questionable if a two thirds majority can be found in the Senate.

One other note. The Tenth Amendment states “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.”

This means if it isn’t stated specifically in the Constitution, then the Federal Government doesn’t have the power to oversee it. That is reserved to the states.

Obama is using Executive Orders to implement much of his gun proposals. Although much that has been reported by the media is short on specifics, Obama seems to be using the orders to cover things that would be not be very objectionable to Congress. Things like better background checks for mental health problems and criminal records is even supported by the National Rifle Association. Obama is doing this to stop the Republicans from being able to vote for reasonable gun controls. This furthers his campaign to paint Republicans as extremists. It seems he is leaving some of the most restrictive items to Congress, where passage is questionable.

Next Four Years

As I’ve stated over and over, Obama will continue to have problems with the economy and federal debt. Another area where his policies will create problems for America is our foreign policy. The administration is seen as weak by the radical Muslims. This will encourage them to be more bold in their aggression against us. Americans might not be safe anywhere in the world. Under previous administrations, American citizen was kidnapped or killed overseas, it was treated as an attack against the U.S. directly. This administration doesn’t treat these attacks with the same sense of urgency. This will only cause Americans who travel abroad to be in more danger. Obama won’t admit that the radicals are much stronger than before. He refuses to face this problem because he wants to cut the military and reduce our military might around the world.
